Dag Erik Elgin (b. 1962, Oslo) studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy and the Academy of Fine Art in Oslo. Elgin’s work is informed by an ongoing investigation into the history of painting, modernist ideals and contemporary visual culture. He has established a practice where the specific physical qualities of painting, historical analysis and personal production are constantly negotiated. His projects engage in an explorative dialogue with the history of art practices, interpretation, provenance and reception. Recent projects like In Order of Appearance, Originals Grisaille and La Collection Moderne introduce text-based works and repetitive strategies as catalysts for exploring modernism's ongoing affair with current cultural and aesthetic representations. A parallel production of texts accompanies the visual investigations.
OSL contemporary was established in 2011 by Emilie Magnus. Located in Oslo’s vibrant West End, the gallery has since developed an extensive program, currently representing twenty-three emerging and established artists encompassing a diverse range of disciplines.
With the focused initiative to nurture the artists’ positions within the Nordic region and promote their practice to a wider global audience, the gallery works closely with local institutions and museums whilst continuously engaging and participating in projects, exhibitions, and art fairs internationally.
