Cosmic Cookies, 2022 Mixed media on paper 21 x 15 cm (8 1/4 x 5 7/8 in) Gellein's practice sits at the intersection of visual art and film, exploring themes of power, politics, sexuality, gender, and emotion. The works create visual poems that reveal hidden emotional landscapes inspired by camp, horror and avant-garde film, German expressionism, literature, queer theory, and politics. Gellein challenges the boundaries of what queer feminist film can be and how it can be created and presented. They regularly collaborate with artists in performing arts, dance, music, film, and visual arts. For Gellein, the production process is as necessary as the final result. They explore different methods of performance and filmmaking on set to create a safe arena to address vulnerable or uncomfortable topics. Anette Gellein (b.1995) is a filmmaker and multi-media artist who works with sound, text, images, drawing, performance, and textiles.
